Activities

Activity 1

The earlier sections of the 'Background' material deal with some information on Afghanistan and the "Eurasia" and "South Asia" regions. This activity will help you to know where places are and some of the characteristics of this country and the geopolitical region in which it is located.

a) Using an atlas as a guide, draw two outline maps of this region of the world. Label one map "Eurasia" and the other map "South Asia".

Locate, draw and label the following information on either map.

b) Include and identify on either map the approximate latitude and longitude of the Khyber Pass [on the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan - the most direct route between Islamabad and Kabul]

c) Use an atlas to list the fifteen nations that are considered to make up the region of the Middle East

d) Use a world map from your atlas to predict the straight-line distance from the capital city of the state or territory in Australia in which you live, to Kabul the capital of Afghanistan. Use a world map from your atlas to calculate the straight-line distance from the capital city of the state or territory in Australia in which you live, to Kabul the capital of Afghanistan.

How close was your prediction to the actual distance? On your outline map of "Eurasia" or "South Asia" add the actual distance (expressed in kilometres) to a direction arrow from your state or territory in Australia.

Activity 2

Read the three sections:

Choose any six points from these sections that identify words, phrases or statistics concerning the plight of refugees in Afghanistan in 2001.

Activity 3

In preparation for this activity carefully read the 'Background' material, particularly:

and any other extracts provided by your teacher.

Construct a table that organises data which allows you to compare and assess the demographic, economic and social characteristics of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Only include information if you have data for both countries.

Choose and justify your choice of the three main characteristics that are most similar for Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Choose and justify your choice of the three main characteristics that are most dissimilar for Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Activity 4

If you read a summary of the refugee issue in Afghanistan in October 2001 that said,

'the majority of Afghan people had nothing to do with creating the situation - they were the victims of the perpetrators of the tragedy of September 11th',

how would you respond to this assessment. Would you agree or disagree?

How would you justify your response?

Before attempting your answers to these questions clarify with your teacher, or through additional research, your understanding of each of the words 'victims' and 'perpetrators'.

Activity 5

Find all of the quotations from newspapers in the above "Background" sections. Read all of the quotations. Read all of the headlines in the sections "Newspaper articles in 2000 and 2001 on drought in Afghanistan" and "Newspaper articles in 2001 on refugees in Afghanistan". Select the most challenging quotation or headline in this unit. Support you choice with a short paragraph statement on why you chose it and what impact it had on you. Compare your choice and justification with others in your class. Discuss
