Narita is the Tokyo's main international gateway and currently has only one long runway (4,000 metres). A 2,500 metre runway is being built parallel to the existing one to cope with the anticipated increase in traffic tor the FIFA 2002 World Cup. However this airport development has been hindered by protests from local residents and their supporters. The removal of trees at a shrine during construction angered the protesters.
