Hope Valley Rainfall – 2016

Last year had erratic rainfall with some months providing falls way above average, but many having none or virtually no rain at all.

The bush fires of January 2015 were bad however we saw even more damaging fires in the mid-north of South Australia in November where dozens of farms were destroyed. The destruction was total for large numbers of farms where everything was razed – homes, sheds, equipment, fencing, crops, stock. Since then hot, dry winds have added insult to injury by blowing away the unprotected top soil. On the plains where hay, grain and livestock are the main economy periods of good rainfall gave hope of sound crops. Ironically in this country that also means potential fuel for wild fires. Long dry spells throughout the year led to the conditions that allowed an inferno. Even townships suffered direct loss as well as their livelihood from the devastated hinterland.

What will 2016 bring in the way of precipitation to these folk and the rest of our country?

Weather Station Broken

Since the Rain Gauge stopped working a couple of years ago the Anemometer has also given up the ghost.

On top of all this the Weather Station no longer connects to the internet. This appears to have been caused by an update to Windows 7. Shades of that time years ago when a Microsoft update to Windows Me broke it for customers around the world at a time when they were trying to get everyone to upgrade to Windows XP.

This time it worked as I have given in to the nagging and has installed Windows 10. I have not yet had time to re-connect the Station to the internet and may not as there are so few instrument left reporting.

Broken Rainfall Recorder

The rather too small automatic rainfall recorder on our weather station ceased functioning in mid 2014. As it was always somewhat erratic, unreliable and inaccurate I have not bothered to attempt to fix it. I may do so if I find time, but that is unlikely. Consequently please ignore any mention of rainfall on the Weather Station pages here (e.g. The Live Weather pages).

Accepting the the less than desirable location of our manual rainfall device it appears to provide a fair measure of local rainfall. While I am still able and have time and interest I shall continue to record that rainfall.

Hope Valley Rainfall – 2015

This year has begun with bad bush fires near us to the North-East of Adelaide where nearly 30 homes plus stock and other property were lost. A little recent rain has provided some respite for the fire fighters of our largely volunteer CFS. Both of the fires and showers serve to remind South Australians how dry our climate is and how very precious is the limited rainfall.
