This virtual world has “bad actors” who wish to harm you or steal from you. It mirrors the real world in that way so such villains are in a minority. Users can protect themselves by following some cautious, sensible practices. Do remember that while the principles in the following page are mostly still current – the details may not be.
This a a page which is hardly relevant apart from the history of IT. As always there are significant parallels to modern computing. Be sure that in twenty years time what we do and use will be an amusing irrelevance to folk of that future.

This page is incredibly out-of-date because of huge changes in the Internet over the past 25 years or so. However it does provide something of an hostporic baseline on which to ponder.
